Midland teen survives shooting in parents' murder suicide
MIDLAND, Mich. - Two people died in an apparent murder-suicide Saturday night on I-96 in Ionia County.
The couple was found dead in their SUV parked on the shoulder of the highway.
A loaded gun was found under the man's body.
The woman's daughter, 18-year-old Amedy Dewey was shot but survived.
David and Lisa Sommers, both 50 were found shot dead near their SUV.
Sheriff’s investigators believe David shot both women with a shotgun that was found at the scene.
A Grand Rapids TV station reports David had surgery for a brain tumor the day before the shooting.
He picked them up from an airport after Amedy and her mom went on a vacation.
Amedy is a cheerleader here at Midland High School.
Her coach isn't commenting but students we talked to say they found out about it on Facebook.
“I know her personally but like reading the whole story what happened with both of her parents it’s really sad I couldn’t imagine what she is going through. It’s just a terrible thing that anyone could go through,” said Midland Junior High student Luke Butler.
The mother of a cheerleader says the girls may put a t-shirt together that says #Amedystrong.
There is a cheer competition this weekend.
The girls are hoping to travel to Grand Rapids to visit Amedy in the hospital.
