MidMichigan veterans group wins state award

Alternative Veterans Solutions has won Michigan's Homeless Outreach Award for its work in last years Homeless Veterans Resource Fair in Flint.

NBC25 covered the event November 9, 2010 at the Michigan National Guard Armory in Flint. Statistics show 20% of the homeless population are veterans.

The award will be presented at the American Legion of Michigan Annual Convention in Grand Rapids June 25, 2011. This puts Alternative Veterans Solutions in the final four for the national award.

Tredale Kennedy of Alternative Veteran Solutions says he's honored by the award. "It's good to see the people who've served our country get the recognition they deserve. We have a part in honoring them daily by helping them get the services they need to live independently." Kennedy says 2010's standdown at the Flint armory fed and clothed 200 veterans. He's also working on housing six veterans.

"I'd like to thank NBC25 for covering this event last year to get the word out that our veterans deserve our help because we are in debt to their service," says Kennedy.

This year's Homeless Veteran Standdown/Resource Fair is November 9th from 9:30AM to 4PM at 1015 Carpenter Road COFY Center in Flint. To volunteer, call 1-877-721-7271.
