Man's best friend is joining a group of bronze statues at Swartz Creek's cherished veterans memorial downtown.
The Swartz Creek Area Veterans Memorial Committee unveiled a sixth and final statue of a military dog during a special dedication ceremony on Friday. The statue was modeled after Ike, the K-9 officer with the Swartz Creek police department.
Fundraising efforts began in January, and committee members say the community helped raised $8,700 for the statue that will represent the more than 2,500 military dogs that serve with U.S. troops worldwide.
â??It's actually going to be dedicated to the city and it's our last statue unveiling, which was kind of a surprise statue,â?? explained Joan Henry, secretary for the Swartz Creek Area Veterans Memorial.
The bronze German shepherd is placed just outside the circle of five statues of service members representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
The Swartz Creek Veterans Memorial is located off Morrish Road across from the police station.
