Authorities in southeastern Michigan say a 39-year-old man accidentally shot a 30-year-old man to death.

The Monroe County sheriff's department says the accident happened about 5:45 p.m. Saturday at a home in Frenchtown Township, near Monroe.

The department says in a statement that deputies answered a call and found 30-year-old Michael Rawlins in the kitchen with a gunshot wound in the head.

It says a 39-year-old Monroe "was handling a firearm near the victim when the gun accidentally discharged."

The release says that Rawlins died of his injuries at South Shore Hospital.

The department says its investigation is continuing.
