State Sen. John Moolenaar has won the Republican primary in a central Michigan congressional seat where Rep. Dave Camp is retiring.
Moolenaar, of Midland, defeated Saginaw-area businessman Paul Mitchell and Roscommon businessman Peter Konetchy in the 4th District.
Moolenaar gained support from establishment conservative groups such as the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and anti-abortion group Right to Life. He won despite Mitchell giving his own campaign $3.2 million, which made him one of the biggest self-funding House candidates in the country.
Moolenaar will be favored to defeat Democrat Jeff Holmes in November in the Republican-leaning seat that covers 15 counties.
Camp rose to head the House Ways and Means Committee but is retiring after 24 years in Congress.
