MSP trooper shot, killed after traffic stop overnight

According to the "Bridgeport High School 1988" Facebook page, Butterfield is a 1988 graduate of Bridgeport High School. He joined the MSP in 1999. He is a member of the 118th Trooper Recruit School. He served at the Manistee and Hart Posts, and is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Michigan State Police trooper Paul Butterfield was shot during a traffic stop last night. Police say he died during emergency surgery at Munson Hospital.
Two people are in custody.
Trooper Butterfield called in information before being shot, which allowed the police to locate him and his vehicle.
The police then found the two suspects as a gas station in Wellston at about 8:30 pm. The two sides exchanged gunfire.
One of the suspects was shot.
A man and a woman were both taken into custody. The injured suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Governor Rick Snyder released a statement about the shooting.
â??Our hearts break when a Michigan State Police trooper, or any of our other police officers or firefighters, is killed in the line of duty. Their loss is unquestionably felt by their families as well as the communities they serve and our entire state. We realize the extraordinary difficulty of their jobs and the sacrifices they make for us.
â??A tragic event like this shakes us all, but it also bolsters our resolve to make our streets and our neighborhoods safer.
