Firefighters from several departments responded to a massive fire in downtown Lapeer that affected several buildings Tuesday.
The fire started in an apartment at 156 W. Nepessing St. near Court around 7 p.m. The apartment is adjacent to the historic PIX Theater. Witnesses say the fire spread to the theater and also to nearby businesses.
"Fire started coming out of the windows, and then you could see the fire actually rise from the top of the building. At one point it was coming almost halfway over the street, the flames were so high," said Dan Cousineau, who owns Dragon Karate School across the street.
Departments from Davison, Oxford, Imlay City and Metamora were also on scene. Roads were blocked to traffic as crews worked to control the fire.
The Lapeer Fire Department's assistant fire chief said no firefighters or residents were hurt, but that it will take several hours to determine the extent of damage and whether the fire was intentionally set.
