A new program in Flint aims to salvage items from blighted and vacant properties and use them to help people gain skills and economic opportunities.
The Shammah Outreach and Consulting Services started B Light Restoration Center, which provides tools and materials salvaged from blighted properties. Those participating in the program may transform the materials into something new.
The center works with private owners of abandoned properties to salvage items.
In a statement, the nonprofit's CEO says Lynette Delgado says: "The transformation of old items into new is symbolic of what can happen to individuals given the opportunity to develop skills." She says their outreach is one person, home and neighborhood at a time.
