No primary challenger to Snyder coming this week

It now appears that Governor Rick Snyder will be running unopposed in this year's Republican primary.

A conservative activist says there will be no "surprise" announcement this week of a Republican challenging Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder for re-election.

The website has been running a countdown clock to a big announcement Friday, when Republicans gather for their biennial meeting on Mackinac Island.

But blog operator Jason Gillman told The Associated Press that none of three unnamed candidates considering running against the Republican governor will enter the race. The Traverse City business owner says he plans to release a statement Friday asking Republicans still to oppose Snyder's re-election because he backed Medicaid expansion.

Gillman says the search continues for another conservative to challenge Snyder. U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer is the only Democrat running.

Snyder is expected to run again but hasn't yet announced.
