Police investigating possible explosion at Wickes Park

***UPDATE (4/17/2013 6:32 p.m.)***

Saginaw Township Police personnel and firefighters responded to Wickes Park (McCarty Road near Hospital Road) this afternoon at approximately 2:30 pm. Two witnesses reported hearing a loud noise or explosion in the park area. Officers responded to the scene and secured the scene. Officers requested the assistance of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms

A.T.F. agents and Michigan State Police Bomb Squad as a precaution. Upon arrival of these agencies, officers checked the area and found a trash can that was overturned and the lid was removed. It appeared that possibly a low explosive type instrument (possibly a firework) may have exploded in the trash can.

Early information from unknown sources had indicated that a pipe bomb might have exploded. There was no factual evidence at the scene to indicate that a pipe nomb had exploded.

Officers, ATF agents and MSP personnel checked the area and found the area to be safe. The park will be reopened to the public.

If anyone has any information as to who might ignited an explosive item, they are encouraged to contact Saginaw Township Police Department at 989-793-2310.
