Police say Instagram is how they discovered school shooting plot

Argentine Township Police say the plot to shoot up two Genesee County schools was discovered first through social media. The police chief says several posts on different sites were found, including Instagram.

Argentine Township Police say the plot to shoot up two Genesee County schools was discovered first through social media. The police chief says several posts on different sites were found, including Instagram.

"When the information first came to us, it was shocking," said Russ Ciesielski, Interim Superintendent, Linden Community Schools.

On Wednesday, October 28 all the Linden Community Schools superintendent Russ Ciesielski knew is there was a threat.

"The nerves kind of leave because you have thousands of students that you're trying to protect," said Ciesielski.

The FBI was quickly brought in. But no lockdown was put in place. Ciesielski says law enforcement told him there was no immediate danger.

"You don't to create a panic situation but you want to get information out," said Ciesielski.

That information, found by a school resource officer on Instagram and on several other social media sites police say prevented tragedy.

"We do believe they were capable and had the means of doing it," said Detective Doug Fulton, Argentine Township Police.

Police say the attack was set to happen Friday, October 30. Just 24 hours before is when Detective Doug Fulton tracked down and arrested 18-year-old Ryan Stevens.

"It feels good," said Fulton.

According to the superintendent, Stevens once attended Linden Community Schools, but did not graduate from the district.

Argentine Township Police say he and two other teens planned to shoot up the high school, and then head to the middle school. Police say the group had plans to purchase weapons for the attacks.

"We need to thank the law enforcement; we need to thank our school resource officer for acting quickly," said Ciesielski.

Stevens, and 15-year-olds Lamar Dukes and Cody Brewer are now facing charges for conspiracy to commit murder and false report or threat of terrorism. The Argentine Township Police chief tells us the county prosecutor is looking at adding more charges.
