Sailors Association celebrates Destroyer Escort Day on the Edson

The USS Edson was the host of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association "National Destroyer Escort Day" ceremony Saturday.

The ceremony honors all service men and women lost but specifically recognizes those who passed away while serving aboard destroyer escorts.

The association members say it means a lot to be able to host the ceremony on-board the Edson.

"People have passed away you know. To be able to bring in a ship of this magnitude to the Bay City area is pretty much, it helps out the guys and for our veterans it's a big support," said Petty Officer First Class, Renee Barber.

This is the third year the ceremony has been held in Bay City.

The Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum is working to turn the USS Edson into a "floating museum."

The National Destroyer Escort Sailors Association has more than 5,000 members.
