Secretary of State, other state offices closed

Secretary of State branches in two dozen Michigan counties aren't open because of heavy snow and cold weather.

Many state government offices in the Lansing area also are closed Monday except to be staffed for critical functions. The city of Lansing has prohibited non-essential travel on Lansing roads.

State employees in the Lansing area with questions about whether their work is deemed "critical" should contact their supervisor.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says residents can still conduct business online at , including to renew license plate tabs and driver's licenses. Appointments for hearings or driver assessments will be rescheduled in the counties spanning much of southern Michigan.

Customers whose license or registration expires Monday won't be charged a late fee if they renew as soon as branch offices reopen.
