Senate takes up bill requiring replacement of old license plates

Michigan lawmakers are moving to require that drivers replace license plates that are more than 10 years old.
Legislation being considered Tuesday in a state Senate committee would take effect in 2015. Starting then, motorists would have to pay $5 for a replacement plate if their license plate had been issued more than a decade earlier.
Supporters say the goal is ensuring all plates on the road are readable.
The bill also would require the state to study moving to a digital plate printing method. The House passed the legislation 74-33 earlier this month.
