Sewage sludge was released from Flint's Wastewater Treatment Plant into the Flint River this morning, according to city officials.
At 7 this morning, the City of Flint Water Pollution Control Facility discharged the sewage into the river until 11 am due to a pump failure.
Officials at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Genesee County Health Department, as well as officials in Flushing and Flint Township, were all notified.
The Genesee County Health Department recommends avoiding any contact with the Flint River west of the Mill Road Bridge at Flushing Road.
A spokesperson for the City of Flint said that this sewage discharge took place miles down river from the Water Treatment Plant intake, so drinking water will not be effected.
