Shiawassee County officials declare State of Emergency, urge residents to stay off roads


Shiawassee County residents who are looking for additional information about the Local State of Emergency are asked to call 2-1-1. County officials are asking residents to 9-1-1 for emergency calls only.

Shiawassee County officials have declared a state of emergency.

Here is the message from county leaders:

"A Local State of Emergency has been declared for Shiawassee County, Shiawassee County is currently under a state of emergency due to heavy snow fall amounts, blowing and drifting snow causing roadways to become hazardous and impassible.

To avoid accidents and to aid public safety response, all residents are urged to stay off of the roads at this time. In the heavy snow conditions, Police, fire and EMS will have a difficult time reaching persons in homes and business and accidents scenes, stay inside and avoid driving to safeguard yourselves.

Road Commission crews will continue to plow the primary roads throughout the night, this Local State of Emergency will expire once confirmation has been received that roads are clear and passible for public safety response and residential travel.

As a result of the accumulated snow fall and hazardous conditions County offices have been closed tomorrow 6 January. Additional information will be shared by the Code Red notification system as it becomes available, pertaining to this storm and related information or assistance available to County residence."
