Shiawassee County remains under a state of emergency for the third straight day.
Officials say the county road commission is out scraping and maintaining primary roads, while power line crews are working to restore power to the thousands still blacked out. As of Tuesday evening more than 18,000 Consumers Energy customers remained without power.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army have warming centers ready and will be accepting families needing a place to stay Christmas Eve.
Officials say the big concern is making sure people have access to help in the bitter cold.
"The one thing I can just ask them is just to know that we will are working to support their needs any way we possibly can and to do their very best to enjoy their holiday season,?? said TJ Clark, coordinator for Shiawassee County Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Clark said the state of emergency will likely continue for several more days as debris cleanup continues. He added further snowfall Christmas morning and wind conditions could cause more outages.
