Snyder nixes permits for home-monitoring systems

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed bills to eliminate the need for permits to install thermostats, dimmer switches and other equipment for high-tech home-monitoring systems.
Legislation signed Tuesday exempts homeowners from having to obtain a permit when a licensed electrician installs equipment for temperature control, fire and alarm systems. Technicians installing thermostats also won't need a permit.
Snyder says the new laws will eliminate regulations that burden homeowners.
Other bills signed by Snyder raise the price of an annual off-road vehicle license from about $16 to about $26 and continue the collection of fees from landfills and hazardous waste generators.
