NBC25 is learning the doors to two mid-Michigan grocery stores will close for good by the end of the year.
Spartan Stores is shuttering two of its VGâ??s locations in Genesee County.
A store employee from the VGâ??s store in Burton and a member of the business community with knowledge of the plans tells NBC25 News, the VGâ??s stores in Burton and Flint Township will close by the end of year, leaving more than 100 workers left with out jobs.
The closures will in turn send a ripple effect across Genesee County.
The VG's grocery store on Corunna Road is a daily stop for Kathy Martinico.
â??For something, for the office,â?? says Martinico. â??If we need paper towels or stuff for the bathroom or paper cups.â??
Kathy manages the eyeglass shop three doors down.
â??Weâ??re kind of concerned, we're worried about the people that work there,â?? says Martinico.
Over the years, the workers at VG's becoming more than just cashiers to Kathy.
â??Theyâ??re family. We know the people there,â?? says Martinico. â??First name basis,â?? she adds.
Itâ??s a similar feeling at the VG's in Burton
â??I like VG's because I know the people there. They're just friendly people, they need jobs just like anybody else,â?? says Gail Fielder, who shops at VGâ??s.
VGâ??s employees tell NBC25 News, letters were handed out on Friday, confirming the closures.
Meantime, shoppers are taking to Facebook, trying to save their local grocery store.
â??Iâ??m shocked,â?? says Jane Lovejoy. â??I can't believe that they're shutting down because we need this store here, we really do,â?? she adds.
â??Weâ??re worried about us. What are we going to do? We don't have a grocery store to run to,â?? adds Martinico.
NBC25â??s calls to VGâ??s parent company, Spartan Stores, were not returned Wednesday.
