State Capitol roof replacement leads to extra cost

A $950,000 roof renovation project at the state Capitol this summer ended up cracking the cement sidewalk leading up to the building, prompting more work.
A crew on Wednesday was removing one of the sidewalks leading up to the Capitol after a crane cracked the concrete. Steve Benkovsky, facilities manager at the Capitol, says sidewalk replacement work will cost about $35,000.
The 4-inch thick concrete is being replaced by 6-inche thick concrete, so if heavy machinery is brought in again there will be a reinforced spot for it to sit.
Other work this summer included a roughly $370,000 renovation of the state's House and Senate chambers. Officials say the renovations are the largest in 20 years.
