Suicide Prevention Walk raises awareness

Hundreds of people joined in for a 5k run and walk to raise money for depression awareness and suicide prevention.

It took place on the campus of Northwood University on Sunday.

Organizers say this year's participation of 800 people breaks last year's record of 600 runners and walkers.

Nearly, $46,000 was raised for the Walk for Hope organization.

The money will also help organizers put on special events and training sessions in the Great Lakes Bay region.

â??We walked in honor of our family who lost to suicide and struggle with mental illness,â?? says Barb Smith, one of the eventâ??s organizers. â??Some of our family members, others walked in support of agencies, people really want to empower and be a voice for those that we lost.â??

The event was hosted by Survivors of Suicide, a support network serving Central Michigan and surrounding communities.
