The 'Promise Zone' bill will help students get scholarships for college
High school graduates in Flint will soon benefit from the state's "Promise" scholarship program under legislation signed by Govenor Rick Snyder.
The Promise Zone law allows communities that secure enough private funding to use some state tax revenue to pay students' college tuition.
With the help of Consumers Energy and the Detroit Pistons, "the Flint Promise" already has $2 million in funding.
Flint area Senator Jim Ananich, a sponsor of the bills, says the goal is to have "the Promise" available to students in the 2017-2018 school year.
