Thousands expected for annual Mackinac Bridge Walk

Thousands of people are expected to take part in the annual Labor Day walk across the Mackinac Bridge.

The 56th bridge walk begins Monday at 7 a.m., led by Gov. Rick Snyder. Walkers will be allowed to start until 11 a.m., beginning on the north side in St. Ignace and heading south across the 5-mile-long span to Mackinaw City.

There's no charge to take part, but it costs $5 for a bus ride to either side of the bridge to pick up your car.

Baby strollers and wheelchairs are allowed, but bicycles and other wheeled vehicles are not. Running also is prohibited except for those pre-registered for the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness jog.
