Three Bay City public safety officers suspended pending criminal investigation

Bay City Public Safety Dir. Mike Cecchini said three public safety officers are on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into "serious" allegations.

Three Bay City Public Safety officers are suspended after what the chief calls serious charges.

Public Safety Director Mike Cecchini isn't divulging much, pending the investigation, but he told NBC25 news that a citizen filed a complaint with the Bay County Sherriff's department about officer misconduct regarding some missing property.

Cecchini said officers Don Aldrich, Brian Ritchey and Keath Bartynski were put on paid administrative leave a few days after the alleged event, which happened May 2.

Independent investigators conducted the criminal investigation, which is now under review in the county prosecutorâ??s office. Meanwhile, a separate internal investigation is looking into whether the officers violated any department policies.

â??Law enforcement officers in general are held to a higher ethical standards than people in the general public because of the powers that they possess,â?? Cecchini said. â??So you have to have people with high ethical standards.â??

Cecchini added the internal investigation should be complete by the end of the week. If the allegations are sustained, the officers could face anything from a written reprimand to dismissal.
