*** END UPDATE***
The peace and quiet of Van Geisen Road in Tuscola County was shattered by gunshots Thursday afternoon.
â??Itâ??s just something that doesn't happen around here,â?? says Jason Frost, a neighbor.
Police say it all started with a 911 call from a family member who said there was a domestic dispute at the home.
â??That family member also advised that there appeared to be a deceased family member in the residence,â?? says Detective Lieutenant Brian Cole, public information officer for the Michigan State Police.
Tuscola County sheriff's deputies then responded to the home.
â??The male subject started to fire at officers. Officers returned fire. One officer was hit, the male subject was hit,â?? says Cole.
A neighbor says he saw everything go down.
â??When that happened, it shook me up,â?? he says.
The neighbor doesn't want to be identified out of respect for the family.
â??I knew the husband very well. He's been over and stuff so it's nuts,â?? he says. â??You would never think it's something like that and when the shots were fired, we just thought it was somebody shooting,â?? he adds.
The deputy is expected to recover.
Neighbors and family members are left wondering, what lead a husband to kill his wife and injure a sheriff's deputy.
â??Itâ??s pretty sad. You don't want it to ever happen again,â?? says Frost. â??'m sure it will but you don't want it to,â?? he adds.
Autopsies on the couple are expected to be performed over the weekend.
