FLINT, Mich. --Volunteers at the North Flint Soup Kitchen were hard at work preparing to welcome their guests for dinner Monday afternoon.

The soup kitchen provides warm meals to those without a place to go on Christmas Day.

The Catholic Charities North End Soup Kitchen serves two meals a day but Monday will be one of their biggest meals of the year as they prepare to serve around 300 people a Christmas feast with a side of holiday cheer.

It's a holiday tradition that the soup kitchen has put on for years, making sure no one goes hungry on Christmas.

"A lot of them just come to eat, might be the only meal they have, the only time that it feels like Christmas because they're with other people,” said Julie Woods.

Julie Carpenter has been a cook with the soup kitchen for two years, she says the people she serves are what keeps her coming back.

"I like the clients, I come out and talk to them to see how they're doing, to me they're just people.”

She says the dozens of volunteers that come in to help with the preparation and serving make her job possible.

"If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be able to do it."

Sonia Pate says her sister encouraged her family to come out this year.

"It's part of her tradition and she just said I had to come, so I came and I’m glad I did. It was really humbling.”

She says the experience allowed her to reflect a little on her own life.

"It put things in perspective, like we're really blessed to be able to help people and they still were smiling and telling us Merry Christmas, it was really nice."

Volunteer Jonathan Woods agrees.

"It’s really uplifting, it allows you to stay humble but also you know talk to the people out there, they're just like us, you know maybe someone had a bad break but they're just like us."
