For two days, twice a year families and friends can enjoy fishing Michigan waters without a license.
February 15 and 16 is one of those free fishing weekends. But anglers say this yearâ??s weather is keeping fishermen off the ice.
Typically a license must be purchased through the Department of Natural Resources before fishing.
The free fishing weekend gives access to Michiganâ??s 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline and more than 11,000 inland lakes, free of charge.
"Oh yeah the weather is effecting it quite a bit. The snow is too hard to walk through. Itâ??s too deep and ice is thick, so you better have a power auger. That's what you got to have," said Jeff Gifford, Genesee County.
The next free fishing weekend is June 7, and 8.
