MIDLAND, Mich. -- We often highlight the athletes the make it past the trials to the Olympics, but what happens when you just miss qualifying by a second?
That's what happened this past January to 25-year-old Midland native, Brett Perry. During the trials he took the 4th place spot in the men's 500 meter for long track speed skating.
He was within a second of the third place finisher, barely missing a secured spot on team USA.
"It was kind of disappointing, but it was also my best time and it inspired me to keep skating and make a run for the 2022 Olympics in China, " said Perry.
His parents Deb and Paul Perry say they couldn't be more proud of their son. The sport can take a mental, physical and financial toll, but they say it's all worth it.
