There’s an easy fix for cranky kids going back to school

This is the last weekend for summer vacation for some children in the borderland and the thought of going back to school is adding stress to their lives.

The hardest part of going back to school is going to sleep at a decent time and waking up earlier than they have for the last few months.

We spoke to sleep deprivation specialist Elizabeth Barraza-Baird to learn what you can do to make the process easier for your children.

She tells parents to start the ritual of going to bed at a decent time and waking up early at least “a week or two prior to getting ready for school. That way they can get that schedule going instead of just rushing them through that schedule the day or the night before school."

She added that failure to start the ritual a week or two before school starts will make it “very difficult to get them out of bed in the morning.”

Additionally, the National Sleep Foundation suggests you maintain a sleep schedule for your child and especially stay away from catching up on sleep on the weekends.

Avoiding big meals, television or video games before bedtime is essential for a good night’s rest.

The foundation also suggests establishing a bedtime routine like offering quiet time, reading a book or taking a bath around the same time each day to let their body know that it is time to sleep.
