Kupiec defeats Wilson in GOP 5th District primary

Genesee County businessman and first-time political candidate John Kupiec defeated challenger Rick Wilson in the Republican primary for the 5th Congressional District. He will now face incumbent U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee for the November general election. Kildee soundly defeated challenger Scott Withers.

The political dynamics were a bit interesting in the Republican contest. Election returns appear to show Kupiec drawing most of his support from Genesee County, with 14,727 votes (61 percent) compared with 9,304 (39 percent) that went to Wilson. All precincts are reporting.

In Saginaw County, the contest was quite close. Kupiec received 2,190 votes (50.25 percent) and Wilson tallied 2,159 (49 percent), with all precincts reporting. The story shows more dynamic in Bay County. Wilson actually beat Kupiec there with 3,314 votes (54 percent) to 2,732 (45 percent) respectively, with all precincts reporting.
