Family remembers mother, son killed in murder-suicide in Kalamazoo
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A sad update this morning to an already tragic story. After fighting for his life all day Thursday, we now know a four year old involved in a murder suicide in Kalamazoo has died.
Nick Mitchell’s mom, Julina Gibson, was also murdered by her son's father, who then took his own life. Her brother tells us he watched in horror as she died right in front of him at the home on Emerson Street.
"I heard my sister yelling, I heard gunshots. I opened the door and my sister was crawling to me asking me to help her,” said Clinton Gibson, Julina’s brother.
Clinton Gibson says he's still in disbelief. He woke up to find his sister Julina and baby Nick, as the family called him, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Julina died on scene.
Baby Nick was rushed to Bronson Hospital where he died late Thursday night.
The man police say is responsible, Julina's ex and Nick's father, Nick Mitchell, took his own life after the shooting.
Family members tell Newschannel 3 a custody dispute is what led to the deadly violence.
"He just found out he had a child support warrant, she probably antagonized him about that. Julina let him get the kid, so he was dropping him off, he must've planned this,” said Clinton Gibson.
Four-year-old Nick Mitchell was part of the pre-school program at the Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency.
In a statement KRESA Superintendent Dave Campbell told Newschannel 3:
We were devastated to hear of the tragedy that took place in Kalamazoo early Thursday morning. We extend our deepest condolences to this horrific event. Our thoughts and prayers will be with the friends and family of the victims in the difficult days ahead.
The Gibson family tells us they are in the process of planning a memorial for Julina and Baby Nick.
Kalamazoo Public Safety is still investigating what led up to the double murder suicide.
