Saginaw Spirit Defeat No. 1 Ranked London Knights in Front of a Home Crowd

Spirit captain Garrett Ross celebrates a goal against London

On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit geared up to play Midwest Division London Knights at The Dow Event Center.

The first twenty minutes saw a solid effort from both teams. While aggressively searching for scoring opportunities, Saginaw struck first. Assistant Captain Justin Kea found himself in the middle of a scramble in front of the net and took advantage of the play. His 16th goal this season was assisted by Jeremiah Addison and Nick Moutrey. With less than five minutes left in the period and working on a power play, Garret Ross recorded an unassisted backhand wrist shot to end the first period with a 2-0 Spirit lead. Spirit goaltender and Detroit Red Wings prospect Jake Paterson had a spectacular shutout first period.

The second period saw more exciting action and hard work from both squads. Scoring off a perfectly placed pass from Justin Kea, Andrey Alexeev added to the Spirit lead with his sixth goal this season. While Knights winger Josh Anderson was in the penalty box, Spirit center Jimmy Lodge converted a goal with assists from Garret Ross and Dalton Young to increase the score to 4-0. Bo Horvat answered for the Knights when he buried the puck top shelf in the back of the net assisted by Max Domi and Seth Griffith. To close the second period, Chicago Blackhawks prospect Alex Broadhurst cut the Spirit lead to 4-2 with an unassisted goal.

The only goal of the final period was scored on an empty London net. Spirit Captain and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Garret Ross sealed the deal with his second goal of the night, on a shorthanded play, off an assist from Dalton Young. Saginaw goalie Jake Paterson stole the show once again in the third period, denying all London shots on goal. The Saginaw Spirit continue their home ice winning streak, beating the London Knights 5-2.
