The Saginaw Spirit opened the 2012 training camp Monday August 27th at the Dow Event Center.
The Saginaw Spirit opened training camp Monday at the Dow Event Center.

Most of the first day was spent fitness testing. Wednesday the players hit the ice for two scrimmages, one at 10 AM and one at 6 PM. Ice time continues throughout the week.

Of the 33 players who reported to training camp, 17 of them are returning from last year. The rest are draft picks and one free agent.

One notable player missing is Chicago Blackhawk's prospect Brandon Saad, who most likely will play in the AHL this year.

Rookies and veterans alike used Monday as a day to get their bearings before they put the pads on and hit the ice for second-year Head Coach Greg Gilbert and his staff.

"I'm nervous, but excited at the same time just to get started and have fun and enjoy the experience," Spirit first-round 2012 draft pick Jeremiah Addison said.

"I remember coming in my first year and being pretty nervous to meet the team and the coaches," third-year player, and Red Wings draft pick, Jake Paterson said. "But I would say pretty much get comfortable, you came here for a reason, play the way you play."

Spirit Training Camp is open to the public.
