FLINT, Mich. - The Flint Community Education Initiative hosted a kick-off Wednesday evening for its success mentoring program.

The event was held at the Mott Community College Regional Technology Center.

The goal was to teach the value of mentoring in schools to community members as a way to get more people involved.

"We had parents doing a workshop with Doctor Laughton from John's Hopkins University, equipping our parents with strategies to help their kids succeed. Our success mentors were in an orientation so that they can be matched with a student in the city to help support our student success here in the Flint area," said Kerry Downs of the Flint Community Education Initiative.

The invitation-only event was funded through the success mentoring initiative at Johns Hopkins University.
