Missing dog from Texas found in Midland, Michigan
A dog gone missing from Texas will soon be headed home after he was found in Michigan.
"We don't know how the dog ended up here, she has no clue how the dog ended up here, we wish he could tell us but he's not talking," said Diane Winkler, the volunteer coordinator for the Humane Society of Midland County.
Oreo disappeared just before Hurricane Harvey struck Texas in late August.
There was no sign of him until he turned up more than a thousand miles away.
"Someone found him wandering in Midland, and she said she picked him up because she was afraid he would get hit by a car,” said Winkler.
Oreo was brought to the Midland County Humane society.
There they discovered he had a microchip, and after scanning it, they found his owner.
"We contacted the person, still a working number, got a hold of her, and she was missing her dog for 2 to 3 months, so she was really grateful to hear from us, I think her words were something like 'my baby!,'" said Winkler.
Attention then turned to finding a way to get Oreo on a flight back home.
A Thursday morning post on the humane society's Facebook quickly led to an outpouring of offers.
"It is so heartwarming to know people care so much. We've had offers from flight attendants, pilots, individuals who are willing to pay his way, fly with him, offer up their frequent flier miles, it's amazing to see the support this community has for this dog," said Winkler.
Oreo is homeward bound after a brief stay in Mid-Michigan.
The humane society found someone on Thursday who committed to helping Oreo return to Texas.
On Friday the dog will be on a flight back to Houston.
