FLINT-- I have mixed emotions about this weekend at the movies. I've been looking forward to it because Tyler Perry's 'A Madea Family Funeral' is finally here. I've also been dreading it because this will be Madea's final film. More on that later. First, the other film making its debut this weekend.
'Greta' is a drama-thriller from director Neil Jordan. It's about a young woman named Frances who finds a handbag on the New York subway and promptly does the right thing. the returns it to Greta, an eccentric French widow who strikes up a seemingly harmless friendship with Frances.
But, when Greta's behavior turns erratic and obsessive, Frances has to end the relationship before things get crazy.
You may see me passing you on the freeway to get to a theater to see 'A Madea Family Funeral.'
The hilariously funny Mabel Simmons-- AKA, Madea-- is back! And, it looks like she's as funny as ever. Madea and her family come together for what should be a joyous reunion but things go haywire and turn into an unexpected nightmare when they have to plan a funeral in the backwoods of Georgia and Madea is in charge.
If you've loved her over the years, you won't want to miss this film because it's Madea's last movie. At least, that's what Tyler Perry is saying right now.
"It's been a wonderful run and I'm so grateful. But, I'm turning 50 and I certainly don't want to be her age playing her" said Perry.
Madea has been the foundation of Tyler Perry's creative empire for years starting on the stage and moving to the big screen. Perry created and plays the character and several others.
I don't really want to think about life with no more Madea. I'm hoping Perry will reprise the role, from time to time. Just for fun.
Box Office Pro as 'A Madea Family Funeral' earning $22.8 million in its opening weekend, finishing second behind 'How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World' which is predicted to sit atop the box office for a second week. 'Greta' will take in $3.5 million and finish in seventh place.
