MOVIE PICK: 'Miss Bala' hits big screens on slow weekend for Hollywood

January 30, 2019- Ismael Cruz Cordova, Gina Rodriguez and Cristina Rodlo seen at Columbia Pictures presents the World Premiere of MISS BALA at Regal L.A. Live

FLINT-- The Super Bowl is Sunday and Hollywood knows better than to compete with the National Football League, so it's a slow weekend for movie openings. You have just one new film making its debut.

"Miss Bala" stars Gina Rodriguez of "Jane The Virgin" television fame. She plays a Los Angeles makeup artist named Gloria who goes to visit her best friend in Tijuana, Mexico. Here friend disappears from a nightclub and while searching for her, Gloria is kidnapped and forced to smuggle laundered money for a drug cartel.

She works her way into the good graces of the cartel's leader and the Drug Enforcement Administration and has to turn the tables on everyone to escape. Surviving will require all of her cunning, innovation and strength. And the bullets will fly. (Bala is Spanish for bullet.)

"Miss Bala" doesn't score well with the Rotten Tomatoes crowd but moviegoers still want to see it. Critics say it's all bark and little bite. I've seen the trailer several times. With nothing else new to check out, I'm inclined to give it a shot, just not a marquee.

The weekend box office battle will belong to "Glass" and "The Upside" for the third straight weekend. Both will finish one-two with "Miss Bala" opening in third place according to Box Office Pro.
