(BURTON, Mich.)- It's official name is a mouthful: the GM CCA Davison Road Processing Center.
It'll replace one that's just down the road in Flint.
Tim Turvey, Global Vice President of GM CCA says "it's GM's largest investment in a warehousing and logistics facility in the US in roughly 40 years".
Construction is active at Genesee and Davison Roads on the 140 acre lot.
Turvey says its an important project but the new jobs are still to come.
How many jobs? Turvey said "I don't want to get into that. I can say we're retaining 700 people and there will be new jobs later. "
It's good news for Burton, who's mayor says she's 'giddy' over the news.
As for the jobs, she says this shows Burton is rebounding.
Mayor Paula Zelenko says " 'right from the beginning, this was a project about retention about jobs that are here. And then the growth of new jobs, so that's a boost to this area".
GM will lease the building from North Pointe Development of Kansas City.
The new plant will be over 1 million square feet.
Think of it this way: The average new Meijer store is 200,000 square feet.
This would be 5 times that.
GM says the new plant will open early next year.
No plans have been identified on what will happen to its current facility , that its leasing, just down Davison Road.
