Prosecutor: Shriner’s ex-chief of staff stole $500,000, contributed to local campaigns
GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. --Genesee County Clerk John Gleason is demanding politicians return tainted campaign funds.
He says the money was stolen from the Elf Khurafeh Shriners by their former chief of staff, Nick Singelis.
Singelis is now in a federal prison for bank fraud.
Gleason oversees Genesee County's campaign finance reporting but he's asking every politician, not just in his county but throughout the state and in other states where Singelis worked to return money that was meant to help sick children.
According to the plea agreement, Singelis and another unnamed conspirator stole more than half a million dollars from the Shriners.
Attorney Robert Swartwood who represents the Shriners claims singelis used the money to live a lavish lifestyle, and even donating to various political campaigns.
Public records show Singelis gave Genesee County Prosecutor Robert Leyton $700 between 2010 and 2013.
In 2012, he gave $500 to Sheriff Robert Pickell.
NBC25/FOX66’s Sarah Jaeger called both Sheriff Pickell and Prosecutor Leyton’s office.
Both say they have already returned the money to the Shriners.
