Skywarn weather spotter training kicks off in Owosso on Saturday
OWOSSO, Mich - If you've ever wanted to learn more about severe storms and become an official National Weather Service weather spotter, now's your chance.
The Detroit/Pontiac National Weather Service office holds several weather spotter training sessions before the spring severe weather season in Michigan.
The next training session is at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 17th at the Owosso Township Hall at 410 S. Delaney Rd, Owosso, MI.
Skywarn is the official weather spotter program for the National Weather Service.
Even with today's advanced weather tracking technology, there's still a big need for spotters to report what they're seeing on the ground.
Training sessions are free and open to the public, and typically last about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
It's open to all ages, but only those ages 13 and up can register to become an official spotter.
Spotter training covers severe weather such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and identification of important storm features such as a wall cloud, funnel cloud, and safety concerns.
