Students heading back to school in the near future were treated to a special barbecue and petting zoo Thursday in Flint.

It was all a part of the Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village’s Back to School barbecue.

During the cookout, Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and Vicki Broome, the daughter of Flint philanthropist Slyvester Broome retired an iconic photo of the community center’s namesake.

"I love that they are still looking out for the kids and this is a place where the kids can come and do activities instead of being out on the street. I really appreciate that you know that that is going to continue on,” said Vicki Broome.

Several other community organizations like the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, the City of Flint Police Activities League, Reviving Our Cities Communities, the Oatmeal Club, Tasty Treats and Insight Institute of Neurosurgery & Neuroscience partnered together to sponsor the event.
