Suspected heroin overdose death near Cass City
By most accounts, Cass City is a quiet place. But the heroin and opioid epidemic have arrived here, too. Just like other small towns across America.
Tina Gomez of Tuscola Behavioral Health Systems points out that it's taken some time for the epidemics to reach smaller communities.
"But it's here now, as evidenced by what happened last evening. However i think this is just the tip of the iceberg," she says.
According to the Tuscola County Undersheriff, deputies responded to a home on Dodge Road a few miles outside Cass City in rural Elmwood Township for a possible overdose of a 26-year old woman.
Tuscola County Undersheriff Robert Baxter says "it appears she was deceased when our officers arrived. We're being assisted by Thumb Area Narcotics Unit".
Drugs were confiscated and heroin is suspected. Meanwhile, Cass City's police chief says there was one other overdose Wednesday, but it wasn't related to opioids.
Meanwhile, there is help available here in Tuscola County for people with heroin or other opioid problems. It's also for people abusing prescription drugs.
Susan Holder, also of Tuscola Behavioral Health Systems says "(we have) a Narcan kit available, at Tuscola Behavioral Health Systems we are offering it free to individuals."
The small inhalers can literally save someone's life.
Gomez adds, "unfortunately we knew it would take an overdose for something like this to be brought to life".
