UAW Local 598 making local kids Christmas wishes come true

UAW Local 598 Toys for Tots Meeting

FLINT, Mich. --UAW Local 598 is pitching in to help make sure less fortunate local children have a great holiday season.

Sunday, they wrapped up their annual Toys for Tots drive.

"This is the one time of the year that we really like to give back so that no kid is forgotten", says UAW Local 598 President Ryan Buchalski.

Buchalski says this more than 20-year tradition helps fill a need for Toys for Tots.

"This is going to have a huge impact on them because unfortunately there's a lot of times where they start that registration in November and they start running out of things before December," says Buchalski

Members of the Union sold popcorn once a week and held a bring a toy to work drive. On average they collect between $10,000-$15,000 worth of toys.

Stacie Mata says she's been participating in this with her husband for many years, and it's a tradition she now shares with her children.

"I just want to teach the kids that it's important to give to other children that may not have a lot of presents at Christmas time and it just shows them that giving makes them feel good," says Mata.

Mata's kids say they love giving back to kids that are just like them.

"It makes me feel happy that people get the opportunity to play with toys and everything because people might not have toys"

"I think it's really nice because like most people like kids don't get lots of toys from their parents"

Their next mission is raising money for the Old Newsboys of Flint.
