Woman hit, killed by vehicle that drove onto sidewalk in Lapeer

LAPEER, Mich. --A 39-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a car as she was walking on a sidewalk.

The incident took place Thursday, Feb. 15 around 6:30 p.m. in the area of Nepessing and Saginaw streets.

The police investigation shows that a 65-year-old man from Metamora was traveling west on Nepessing Street and then left the westbound lane onto the sidewalk on the north side of the roadway.

Police say the man hit Heather Chambers and she was pronounced dead on scene.

His vehicle then continued traveling west on the roadway and hit a tree.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police do not know what caused the man’s vehicle to leave the roadway, but it was traveling at an excessive rate of speed after leaving the roadway.

The incident is still under investigation.
