Police: Sailor with USS Nimitz killed wife before hanging self days after returning home
BREMERTON, Wash. (KOMO) -- Investigators believe a man and woman found dead in a Bremerton, Wash. home Wednesday night was the result of a domestic violence murder/suicide, according to the Bremerton Police Department.
According to the release, investigators believe a 23-year-old sailor with the USS Nimitz fatally stabbed his 22-year-old wife before hanging himself.
On Friday, the wife was identified as Marie Aurora Rivera and the sailor as Francisco Rivera. The Navy said he worked in the air department on the Nimitz and confirmed that he just returned from deployment on Sunday. He enlisted in the Navy from Anchorage, Alaska.
"Cops all over the place. a firetruck. an ambulance," said Jena Staples, a neighbor. "Obviously we thought something domestic had happened."
The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz recently arrived home Sunday to Naval Base Kitsap after a six-month deployment overseas.
On Wednesday, officers responded to the home in the 100 block of North Marion Avenue in Bremerton after receiving a report that two people had been found dead inside.
Police said there were obvious signs of a violent attack inside the home.
Detectives are continuing to investigate what led up to the incident, according to the release.
"I think it's pretty pathetic of him because he killed her and then hung himself," said Alexis Gregory, another neighbor.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact detectives with the Bremerton Police Department at 360-473-5228.
