Isabella Co. woman becomes homeowner with help of Habitat for Humanity

Mt. Pleasant, Mich-- After two decades, a local woman in Isabella County is finally fulfilling her dream of becoming a homeowner with the help of Habitat for Humanity.

Jean Hilyard was selected as the recipient of the organization's Home Ownership program. She works full time at a non profit helping people with disabilities become more independent. She also spent 17 years as a navy wife moving from town to town without a home to call her own . Hilyard says she tried for years to get a loan, but was denied and then this opportunity came right on time.

"I just don't have the words to explain it. I would tell people to never give up. I'm sixty years old and God has blessed me with this home. I am beyond excited," said Hilyard.

In order to receive the home Hilyard has put in more than 200 sweat equity hours and will have a mortgage.

Several volunteers and companies like Home Depot have come together to help Hilyard with the project. She hopes to officially move in this November.
